Turnout Low at Public Hearings on Electric Rate Increase
(2008-09-17)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
The Missouri Public Service Commission is holding a series of fourteen public hearings to get Missouri customers thoughts about the electric rate increases proposed by Ameren UE. But only two people attended a recent hearing on Monday evening in Kirksville to discuss the increase. The Missouri Public Service Commission spokesperson Gregg Ochoa says with this particular rate request the commission is holding multiple hearings to receive as much feedback as possible."A lot of times turnout just depends on if there are other activities going on in the community the commission makes every effort to hold a variety of local public hearings at various different times and locations."
Nikki Hamlin, a personnel manager for Pagliai's Pizza in Kirksville, did not attend the meeting, but she says with an already high monthly electric bill, a rate increase would affect her small business. One of the seven remaining hearings will be this Thursday in Moberly. Ochoa says a formal hearing will be held in Jefferson City beginning the third week of November.
