Wild Animal Adoption Fair this Weekend
(2008-09-12)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
An animal adoption fair begins today at the State Fairgrounds, but it's not cats and dogs that will be available, instead it's horses and burros. A federal agency that manages public land is offering the animals for adoption. Spokeswoman Martha Malik says the bureau hopes to reduce the number of animals on western lands.
"The bureau of land management' goal is to manage healthy free roaming herds on healthy ranch lands. And at this point of time, we would also keep the BLM's wild horse bureau program in balance."
There are about 65 horses and a few burros available. Malik says prospective adopters should remember the animals are wild and will need training.
