Columbia is adding more roundabouts. There are more than 10 already. According to City Traffic Engineer Scott Bitterman, roundabout intersections have decreased traffic, gas usage, and most importantly, the number of accidents.About 90% of fatal crashes will decrease at a roundabout compared to a traditional intersection. Injury crashes go down about 75 percent. And if you just look at the overall crashes, including fender benders and those types of things, you've got like a 40 percent decrease in all crashes
Bitterman says they've received some complaints from drivers who don't like the roundabouts, but he says they'll likely decrease as people get more used to navigating through them.
