Weekly Anti-War Protest Draws Crowd
(2008-09-11)
(KBIA) - People crowded the corners at the intersection of Providence Rd. and Broadway holding up signs and yelling chants. Some signs read Honk for Peace," Bring Our Soldiers Home," Support our Troops, and McCain/Palin. Those supporting the war and those against it stood side by side trying to get attention from passersby. Mark Hiam is the Director of Mid-Missouri Peaceworks. He held one of the Honk for Peace signs as he mentioned he is not for Obama or for McCain, he made it clear he was there to help bring the soldiers home and give the United States a better reputation.

"I really believe that by being present and being vigilant we remind our fellow citizens each week about this war and that they are not alone in their feelings of opposing this war."

Hiam brings a group of people out every Wednesday to protest the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. On the other hand Jonathan Ratliff, the Chairman of the Mizzou College Republicans, was constructing his first celebration.

What's great about this is you know people say that young people aren't for the war, well look out here! All these students out here are supporting the troops, supporting America and supporting John McCain.

The group of Republicans chanted McCain while holding up signs and gigantic American flags. Ratliff expressed that the day was a great success and he planned on celebrating America on a more regular basis. © Copyright 2009, KBIA
