Hickman Student Brings Gun to School
(2008-09-10)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
The Columbia School District is facing many decisions on how to handle an incident that occurred Monday at Hickman High School. An officer saw a group of teenagers smoking across the street from the school, and then discovered one student had a gun in his backpack. Hickman student Kyree Staten was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon. School officials say Staten could face up to 180 days of suspension or could be expelled by the school board after further investigation. As far as school security, the administration is not planning on any extreme changes. Assistant Superintendent Lynn Barnett says she wants student feedback in order to keep the school safe.I think one thing that is very very important is that parents continue to listen to what their children have to say and report to us if the kids have concerns about our schools and the safety in our schools.
. Barnett adds students can keep their eyes open for suspicious behavior. She says students at Hickman High School are still feeling very safe.
