Columbia Public Schools Proposed Changes in Band Program
(2009-10-22)
(KBIA) - The Columbia Public Schools' band program could be playing a new tune next year, and they are asking for public feedback. KBIA's Teryn Schaefer reports. A survey is being sent out this morning to parents with children in 6th through 8th grade, who play in the Columbia Public Schools' band. The fine arts department has proposed changing the band program and wants feedback from parents. It's looking to delay marching band until the 10th grade. Instead, students would just be learning musical development and skills with their instrument for their first two years in band. The survey is being emailed to parents and was given out last night in an open meeting about the new proposal. Columbia public schools' fine arts department director, Debbie Jacobs says the committee will look at all parent feedback. "It won't just be the numbers that we will be looking at, although I think that will be very telling. The comments will be extremely helpful in how we move forward on this." The survey will run until October 27th. The committee will then present its evaluations to the school board on November 2nd.
