Animals Lovers Talk Animal Welfare
(2009-08-11)
(KBIA) - A group of animal lovers are gathering in Columbia tonight.

Artists Benefitting Animals is a coalition of community members who are concerned about animal welfare. It's not only dogs and cats they care about about, but farm animals as well.

For many years, the group has raised awareness in the community about animal issues. Tonight, they'll focus on closing puppy mills in the state and also ending horse slaughter for human consumption. Daria Kerridge is a member of Artists Benefitting Animals. In light of the recent puppy mill closings and pit bull seizures, she says it's a relevant time for people to discuss animal welfare.

"Really what we'll be doing is showing how each one of us, or what each one of us can do to promote a compassionate animal legislation in our state, or in our United States' Congress."

Kerridge says they use the arts to draw attention to animal welfare issues and raise money for causes. Besides discussing animal issues, there will also be music by pianist Sutu Forte and duo The Sparks. Artists Benefitting Animals meets tonight at 6 o'clock at Main Squeeze in Columbia.
