Columbia Public Schools Offering Free H1N1 Shots
(2009-10-27)
(KBIA) - As winter approaches, temperatures are going down. But at Columbia Public Schools, the temperature isn't the only number that's dropping off. So is classroom attendance.

In a proactive move, the school district will soon ask students to roll up their sleeves for free H1N1 flu shots.

"We are right now looking at a trend upwards in the number of absences in comparison to where we were last year," Columbia Public Schools Spokesperson Michelle Baumstark says. "We are also seeing an increase in the number of health room visits and we are seeing some instances of flu-like illness."

Baumstark says the district can't blame absences on the flu because they don't record such data, but they see a benefit in offering their students H1N1 shots. The shots require parental consent, and the district suggests that parents be present as their child receives the shot, but it isn't required.

"We are looking to begin the first clinics on November fourth with administration of the vaccine to West Boulevard Elementary School students and Benton Elementary School students," Baumstark says.

With the help of the Columbia Boone County Health Department, the district then plans to offer the vaccinations at the remaining schools as long as the supply lasts.

In the Kirksville are, those looking to get H1N1 shot may find it difficult. Adair County Health Department Administrator Claudine Frazier says supply is short.

"We have the vaccines for the pregnant moms," Frazier says. "WE have a little bit over a hundred doses. The other vaccine for the other children and the adults, we are completely out of right now."

Frazier says they should receive more vaccines next week, but how much is still unknown.

The Callaway County Health Department says its supply is also short. It will limit the shot to health care workers, police, firefighters, and five to 18-year-olds.
