Boonville May Expand Airport and Fire Department
(2009-11-19)
(KBIA) - A new spending recommendation in Boonville may lead to increased resources and public safety in the city. KBIA's Peter Fleischer has more.

Boonville's city officials are considering moving forward with a new spending plan that includes expansions to the city's fire station and airport.
Fourth ward of the council Morris Carter says one of the most important parts of the new spending plan are the changes to the Boonville Fire Department, because of the way that the changes would aid public safety.

"We're looking at purchasing a new fire truck that would reach the higher story buildings so that's what we're looking at overall is improving the quality of life here in Boonville."

Another one of the major changes to town life could come at Jesse P. Viertel Airport, where the spending plan includes an expansion involving new hangers and enhanced weather stations to help pilots. Airport manager John Taylor says having automated weather stations will help travelers use the airport safely.

"With the automated weather here at the field, that's gonna increase safety for the pilots headed in and out."

Although an exact amount has not been set for the plans for the fire department or airport specifically, the city council has identified over $1.2 million that could be spent on economic development, signs and historic preservation in the city.

Carter said he is confident that the expansion plans from the spending recommendation should increase public safety while still improving the overall quality of life in Boonville.
