RJI Has High Hopes for iPad
(2010-01-27)
(KBIA) - The much-anticipated release of the new Apple iPad, basically a supersized iPod Touch, could have implications at the Missouri School of Journalism. KBIA's Lauren Hasler talked to Roger Fidler of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute about his reaction to Apple's latest release.

Roger Fidler is the program director for digital publishing with RJI. He has been studying portable electronic reading devices since 1981. Fidler says the new iPad is of interest to RJI because it could provide a new platform for the delivery of digital editions of newspapers.

"The apps are pretty exciting, and the things that we can do with those apps give us, I think, greater opportunity to do some new things. We're going to try to figure that out over the next few months."

RJI is hosting a meeting of the Digital Publishing Alliance next month. The Alliance brings together leaders like the New York Times and Washington Post to explore new digital products and strategies. Fidler says the Alliance hopes to have some iPads by the meeting date so members can work together in the development of newspaper applications for the device.

Fidler also is eager to see students start to use the iPads and he says he expects the journalism school to embrace the new technology.
