Lowes Coming to Moberly
(2009-10-30)
(KBIA) - Moberly and surrounding residents can now take a much shorter trip to make those small home fixes. Moberly Economic Development Corporation worked with Lowe's to open up a new location in Moberly Thursday morning. To some people, a hardware store opening up might not be a big deal. But for a community like Moberly, Lowe's is just the business people have been hoping for. Many local businesses and factories have shut their doors due to the economy. Until now, local residents had to commute to Columbia or Hannibal to reach the closest home improvement store. Lowe's spokesperson Maureen Rich says she thinks this location will provide a great deal of prosperity for the community and great accommodations.

"We want the site to be convenient for customers. We want to be able to provide those wide, bright aisles so that our customers easily find what they're looking for and this location will be able to do that."

Rich says this new store location will provide an additional 120 jobs. She says Moberly had the population, potential for growth, and customer concern that Lowe's looks for when building a new location. Rich says right now people are looking to do some repair and maintenance projects. Lowe's contacted Moberly Economic Development Corporation and eventually chose Moberly's site for a new Lowe's location after the corporation showed Lowe's the site. Moberly resident Doug Coonce says he's very excited for the new store. He says he's happy to have a much closer location that will save people money.

"There's more stores to choose f rom. You can usually get a better deal somewhere. And this time of the ages that we're having to struggle through, that is one of the things that everybody's looking for as to save a penny."

Coonce says he wasn't able to find some things at the other stores in town. He says it was difficult to get some jobs done. He says now it'll be much easier for everyone.

"I believe people will eventually move back and say well, you know if it's a possibility if I can get a job there or if they do get a job there they're able to move back to where they felt comfortable with. Lot of them were around here for years that moved away. But they had no choice because there was no jobs."

Coonce says this is just an increase where people can have the opportunity to work and provide hope for more businesses to build and grow. © Copyright 2010, KBIA
