Scrap Metal Company Expanding in Moberly
(2009-10-28)
(KBIA) - After months of work and research, a Moberly business is set to expand and relocate in Moberly. Shapiro Brothers Incorporated is a scrap metal processing company that mainly handles scrap disposal needs. It also provides full demolition and railroad services. The Moberly Area Economic Development Corporation has been working with the Shapiro Brothers in its expansion and improvement efforts. KBIA's Cynthia Yang has this story.

The project began because Moberly-based Shapiro Brothers needed additional space to further its business. The expansion of Shapiro Brothers will create 10 jobs in their yard. The project creates a partnership with Randolph County Sheltered Industries, which allows both to venture into new types of work. They are now able to have opportunities for recycling and scrap work, which will create additional jobs with Sheltered Industries.

Corey Mehaffy is President of Moberly Economic Development. He says that the project is a combined effort with many organizations including the Missouri Department of Economic Development and the City of Moberly. He says that this joint effort is important for making the project and its benefits known.

"It's been a unique project because there are many different pieces of the puzzle. It's been a fun project because I think it's going to have a great positive impact on the Sheltered Industries as well."

Mehaffy says Shapiro Brothers is funding a majority of the project, but a few components including the construction of a rail spur, will be through public funding. He says companies and organizations in the community will be able to use this spur to load and offload rail cars.

"Those folks that have been working at the Shelter in the past who have been recently laid off, many of them hopefully will be able to come back to work as a part of this project, so I think that will be a positive benefit to the community as well."

Shapiro Brothers acquired the property on 100 Sparks Avenue, which is currently owned by the Workshop, and is now working on the next phase of the project. The company plans to install improvements at the site and then move their equipment to the new site. Mehaffy says the project is expected to be complete in the spring.
