Jefferson City Car Dealers Team With Habitat For Humanity
(2009-09-28)
(KBIA) - Local car dealerships in Jefferson City have joined up with Habitat for Humanity to help those in need. Since April, several dealerships in the area have participated in the "License to Build" program that encourages recycling of old license plates.

Kelly Smith, Executive Director of River City Habitat for Humanity, says she's pleased with the response to the program.

"The cans committee is getting very close to their goal. And they do a lot of aluminum can recycling and aluminum siding and they also have started with the city here working on recycling expired license plates."

Jefferson City councilmember Carrie Carroll says in the short time the program has been in existence, new car dealerships have collected 440 pounds of license plates.

The "License to Build" program has been aided by a state law that requires drivers to change their plates when they renew them. Local new car dealerships have served as plate drop-off locations and have volunteered their service centers to install new plates. The program works with the aluminum can collection program that has collected two million cans in six years. Smith says Habitat for Humanity is always looking for volunteers with or without construction experience.

"We find a place for anyone depending on what their strength is," says Smith. "And it does not have to be, you know, painting or hammering or sawing or anything like that. It can be helping with press releases or helping with fundraising events, things like that."

Habitat plans to reach their goal of $65,000 by the end of the year and hope to begin construction once the money is raised.
