Boone County Commissioners Try to Overcome Budget Deficit
(2009-09-17)
(KBIA) -

The Boone County Commissioners are looking for a way to overcome a deficit in the 2009 budget. It currently stands at about $500,000. The initial projection was that the county would face a $1.5 million shortfall. Since it's actually a million dollars less, the county now aims only to raise property tax rates.

By Missouri law, a portion of the county's sales tax revenue must be put aside to help offset residents' property taxes. The county has seen its sales tax revenue drop by three percent this year. As a result, the county is looking at increasing the tax rate.

Citizens who attended a hearing on the issue earlier this week voiced their opposition to the proposal. They say they're living within their means and the county should do the same. County Commissioner Ken Pearson says he respects their opinion, but still has a responsibility to the county.

"Well I think we will take that into consideration, but we also have a responsibility to ensure that government is going to operate effectively."

Commissioners could raise the tax to as much as 28 cents. But Commissioner Pearson says he thinks they will vote for a smaller increase that will put the overall rate at 17 cents. The county's vote is set for Thursday. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
