Health Department Investigating After Guests at Mayor's Breakfast Become Sick
(2010-02-09)
(KBIA) - A number of people became sick after last Friday's Mayor's Appreciation Breakfast at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual event. According to the Marriott's manager, about 150 people attended this year. Health department spokesperson Geni Alexander says her office began receiving calls over the weekend from people who were suffering severe stomach flu symptoms.

"So we don't have a specific number when we take into consideration all the different ways we've heard about this. But suffice to say we've heard from enough people that we are certainly aware of the situation and conducting our classic investigation."

The health department is working to collect food samples and is sending a survey today to people who attended the breakfast- asking questions about if they got sick, when , where they sat, where they ate, etc

The department is also asking people who got sick to submit a stool sample.

The Marriot's manager Bob McDonald says the hotel is cooperating with the health department, but the investigation is pointing towards a norovirus and not food poisoning.

"It is an airborne typically virus and it can be passed on from one person to another very quickly and it is rampant right now."

McDonald says the Marriott does more than a thousand events a year and this is the first time they've ever had an issue. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
