Columbia Farmer's Market Open Through December for First Time
(2009-11-19)
(KBIA) - The Columbia Farmer's Market will extend its season through December for the first time. The increased interest in local foods may lead to a year-round market. KBIA's Modupe Idowu reports.

Traditionally the Columbia Farmer's Market season ends right before Thanksgiving. The last day was supposed to be this Saturday. The increased demand from vendors and producers has inspired the board to extend the season. The market already draws in about four thousand customers per weekend and has nearly seventy local farmers.

Board member Eric Reuter says because the public has expressed great interest in expanding the season, the farmers market is looking to have a permanent home.

"Well we are certainly toward that goal the farmers market and some associated groups are really working to raise money to build the permanent home for the market that would allow us to expand to a winter or year long market."

Rueter says this December is simply a trial basis to see how successfully people respond. The market will be open on Saturdays during December. The market will not be open the weekend after Thanksgiving. You can expect to find beef, lamb, pork, and greenhouse vegetables.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. until noon on December 5, 12, and the 19th. It is located behind the Activity and Recreation Center at 1701 West Ash Street.
