Jetton Throws Weight into Bridge Fight
(2005-06-22)
COLUMBIA
(KBIA) -
Speaker of the House Rod Jetton (R.-Marble Hill) is the latest state official to weigh in on the dispute over a historic bridge near Boonville.
Jetton said Wednesday he disagrees with Attorney General Jay Nixon's move to sue the Department of Natural Resources to stop the DNR from relinquishing control of the bridge.
Jetton says he believes the DNR is trying to protect both the Katy Trail, which is apart of the bridge, as well as the state budget.
I do see though that the bridge would be a major tourist attraction for the city of Boonville. But, I think everybody recognizes including the city of Boonville that we really can't use state dollars for that type of project.
Jetton admitted he has no ability to make the decision regarding the lawsuit. However, he does support any efforts to privately fund renovation of the bridge.
