Fulton High School Creates Wetlands Classroom
(2004-09-20)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
Fulton High School recently took a unique step in teaching students about the environment. The school created a wetland for science students. Wetlands have become increasingly rare across the United States because many have been drained for farming. Wetlands are useful during droughts because they absorb excess water and serve as an oasis. Fulton High School science teacher Edith Laydon says the wetland will be useful for all students.Well, the environmental class and the biology class and other classes can use it also and observe without going a distance to see how wetlands would work.
Federal funds provided 80 percent of the project funding. The school district picked up the rest. Laydon says that while the idea of a wetland isn't revolutionary, it is unique. Only a few other states have done it.
