Filibuster Designed to Block Ford Bill Continues on Senate Floor
(2010-07-14)
(KBIA) - A filibuster of a tax incentives bill for Ford's auto plant near Kansas City continues this morning (Wednesday) in the Missouri Senate.

It was launched during the noon hour yesterday (Tuesday) by Republican Chuck Purgason of Howell County. He says Missouri should be offering incentives to small business owners instead.

A few other senators have sided with Purgason, taking over for him a few times when he wanted to take a break. During one of those breaks, GOP Senator Matt Bartle of Lee's Summit talked about his favorite barbecue restaurant:

L-C's is a place where you in one setting can take in 6,000 calories and just enjoy yourself immensely it is (a) mound of beef, fries that are fried to crispy perfection.

Governor Jay Nixon called the special session in order to provide incentives to Ford and to revamp state pensions.

Senate President Pro-tem Charlie Shields can end the filibuster by using a procedure called moving the previous question. However, it's considered to be very drastic and disruptive to the Senate's working relationship, so much so that most Senate presidents hesitate to use it.
