Columbia Residents Speak Out Against Israeli Attack
(2010-06-02)
(KBIA) - Members of different faiths groups in Columbia gathered today to discuss the Israeli raid on humanitarian aid. KBIA's Katie Steiner has more.

Members of the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian communities met at the Columbia Public Library and talked about how people in Mid-Missouri can change the US policy in the Middle East. Group members spoke out against the Israeli attack and criticized what they see as imbalanced US support of Israel.

Saleem Alhabash is an MU Student who is from Palestine. Alhabash thinks that US is harming its own reputation by allying itself with Israel and giving it more than three million dollars a year.

"The United States is losing its credibility because Israel is not doing anything that the United States is doing. They are not giving the US the respect it deserves after paying all that money on an annual basis."

While this may seem like small event far away for some, Michael Ugarte reminds us that these events affect us all.

"There is a vibrant Jewish community in Columbia and a Muslim Arab community so clearly we have friends and neighbors who are directly affected by these kinds of things."

The Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation and MU's Palestine Israel Peace Association sponsored the event.
