GOP's Take on Higher Education Cuts
(2009-11-17)
(KBIA) - A leading Republican in the Missouri House calls Democratic Governor Jay Nixon's agreement to cut the state's Higher Education budget by 42 million dollars a proactive decision. But House Budget Chair Allen Icet also says it's possible that the 42-million-dollar reduction might not be enough.

"We really don't know the 2011 budget picture that well," Icet says. "Although I would say most people would anticipate, and I would be one of those, that the revenue picture for 2011 will be worse than what it is in 2010."

Despite the bleak budget picture, Icet says a tax increase remains off the table. He cites the fiscally conservative nature of the GOP leadership and Nixon's own pledge when he became governor to not raise taxes. Icet is also seeking the Republican nomination for State Auditor in 2010.
