More than 50 students gathered in MU's Black Culture Center last night to discuss negative depictions of African Americans in US History. The discussion was part of a week long celebration of Black Culture Awareness. A diverse group of students discussed topics that ranged from slavery to the Jena Six to President Barack Obama. Black Culture Center Director Nathan Stephens facilitated the discussion. One part focused on how media outlets depict African American men, women, and children. One ad shown was called a Picanniny. It represented the caricatures of Black Youth. The ad consisted of over dramatized African American features, nude children, and watermelon. Stephens says the Black Culture Center aims to educate different racial groups and serve as a resource for helping people move beyond stereotypes.null
"Were here to try and maybe help put some additional tools in your tool belt. Were here to broaden your horizons. I think once were able to convey that type of message, we'll have more come."
The Center has hosted a number of events this week for Black Culture Awareness Week. The last scheduled event is tonight at the Black Culture Center. It's called Black Friday and there will be poetry, music, and other activities. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
