Development Plan Considered
(2009-09-23)
(KBIA) - Planning and zoning commissions from the City of Columbia and Boone County sought public input Tuesday night on an area plan for the unincorporated region north of I-70 and east of Lake of the Woods Road. The plan was developed in response to the Columbia School Board's proposal to build a third high school on St. Charles Road. City planning and zoning commission member Glenn Rice, says when people hear the words area plan, they assume they're being told what to do with their property. But Rice says people should look instead at the plan as encouraging appropriate development and smart growth.

"You don't stick a quarry next to a school, for instance or an industrial site."

The primary concern of residents at last night's meeting was whether existing infrastructure could handle the increase in traffic new development would bring. They also wanted to know if the plan would force unincorporated parts of Boone County to become part of the City of Columbia.

Input from Tuesday's meeting will help refine the plan before a public hearing in October. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
