Columbia City Budget May Be Finalized Tonight
(2009-09-21)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
Columbia City Council may finalize next year's budget at its meeting tonight. Social services is one area that stands to lose dollars. Voluntary Action Center Executive Director Cindi Mustard says she is hoping the Council will keep funding the same as last year. Mustard said the economy has caused greater demand for services and cuts would hurt many people. The United Way has cut its allocation to every agency by at least two and a half percent, so the Voluntary Action Center is already working with less.We provide bus passes for people to get to and from work or to medical appointments. We have already expended all our money for that this year.
Council member Karl Skala has proposed a measure that would keep funding for the Voluntary Action Center and all socials services the same. Council must approve a budget by October first.
