Moberly Police Seek New Technology
(2009-09-14)
(KBIA) - The Moberly Police Department is looking into a new technology that will help law enforcement detect some crimes. The department is applying for grants and asking the public for help in acquiring a new License Plate Reader. The reader automatically scans passing license plates and runs the number through the department's database. It then tells the officer of any hits it received. Hits include stolen license plates, stolen cars, outstanding warrants and Amber Alerts. Detective Tracey Whearty says the Moberly Police Department is planning to buy a License Plate Reader, but they don't come cheap.

"It's 21 thousand for one system, and that's one system for one patrol car. So they are kind of pricey, but I think in the long run, they're definitely well worth what they do."

While the Moberly Police Department is in the process of funding the new license plate reader, the Boone County Sheriff's Department and Columbia Police Department are also applying for grants to buy the readers.
