Mayor Hindman Not Running for Reelection
(2009-08-27)
(KBIA) - Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman will not seek re-election this April. Hindman has served as mayor since 1995. He says he made the decision not to run again after he won re-election to his current term- which is his fifth. Hindman is Columbia's longest serving mayor.

"I did a little thinking last night, and that's roughly 360 council meetings. I've skipped one or two, but there have been extra council meetings, so I'm sure 360 is pretty darn close."

He says he is making the announcement now so that people seeking to succeed him can prepare their campaigns, which he says he hopes will be "vigorous." Hindman has been a strong advocate for the city's park system and for non-motorized transportation.
The 76-year-old has lived in Columbia nearly all his life. He says he's looking forward to spending more time with his family after his term expires. Hindman's wife, Axie, joined him at the news conference. She says she is looking forward to more flexibility in the couple's life, no longer planning around meetings and events.

"But I must say that we have thoroughly enjoyed his terms as mayor, and it has been a privilege for both of us."

Hindman put an end to some speculation, saying his health is in excellent condition. He will continue to serve the community for the remaining seven months of his term.
