Six Columbia Schools Do Not Meet Federal Progress Benchmarks
(2009-08-24)
(KBIA) - As some students head back to class in Columbia, they may not be at the same school they were last year. A number of schools in the district did not meet progress benchmarks established under the Federal No Child Left Behind Guidelines. Only schools designated as Title I schools are subject to the mandated federal sanctions. Schools not meeting the progress benchmarks are Benton, Blue Ridge, Derby Ridge, Field, Parkade and West Boulevard elementary schools. As a result, students in those schools can elect to transfer to a different school that did meet the proficiency targets. The five Columbia schools that met federal standards include Fairview, Midway, Two Mile Prairie, New Haven and Ridgeway elementary schools. The deadline for submitting a transfer request is Friday. According to federal guidelines, the district cannot deny a student's school choice even if the school they want to transfer to may be at capacity.
