Jefferson City Public Schools Miss Out on Federal Grant for Poor Students
(2009-08-10)
(KBIA) - For the past four years The Jefferson City Public School District has received a grant to assist needy families but this year, the district lost out to Kansas City Public Schools.

KBIA's Sara Wittmeyer reports on what the district plans to do now with out the money.

The Jefferson City Public School district expected to receive the 17,000 federal grant. For the past four consecutive years, the district got the grant and used the money to help needy families with school supplies, clothes, tutoring, and really just anything students would need in their day to day life. School community relations director David Luther says while not getting the grant is a blow to the district, it won't prevent them from getting students the things they need.

Not having it- it creates a situation where we are going to have to find other means but we have those things in place already abut it is disappoint but naturally school districts apply for grants every year lots of them and you get some and you don't get some.

On the upside the district was just notified that it received a $400,000 Emints grant. That money will be used to add technology at East Elementary School. Luther says many of the students who would have benefitted from the homeless grant are the same students who will benefit from Emints grant.
