Columbia Police Department Cuts
(2009-07-30)
(KBIA) - Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton worked with the city manager Bill Watkins to identify areas that could be cut within the police department.

The result is a significant reorganization in the department. The community services unit is being eliminated and two traffic officers are being added.

"These two additional officers will still be police officers so the beauty of it is these two can work traffic enforcement where we need it and the number one complaint we get from people is about traffic issues so it'll help us address some of those complaints and those officers are still available if we need them."

And because the department now operates with the geographic policing model, Burton says there is a lesser need for the community services unit.

To save money, the police department also plans to reduce its fleet by not replacing cars as they start to require expensive repairs instead, officers will start doubling up. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
