County Fair Feels Economic Pinch
(2009-07-20)
(KBIA) - County fairs are a summer tradition. But some have been reporting decreased attendance.. and it's being blamed on the economy. The annual Boone County Fair begins today. Organizers decided to keep the admission price the same as it was last year. This while adding several new events. Fairgrounds general manager George Harris says there'll be a new reptile show, hypnotist show, hobby stock car race, and motorcycle race this year. He says the traditional events that many people look forward to like the ham breakfast and society horse show are still happening to. Harris says because of all these things he's actually expecting attendance to go up.

"I think if our ticket prices were $35 or $40 like some fair are I think it would have an effect on our attendance but for $5 you can't go to the movie for that."

The Boone County Fair runs through July 26. It's the oldest fair west of the Mississippi River.
