Paquin Tower Funding May Be Replaced
(2009-07-02)
(KBIA) -

Boone County Family Resources and The Department of Recreation have proposed replacing the money that was cut from community recreation programs at Paquin Tower last year. KBIA's Allison Clarke explains how this program may get its funding back.

Last year the City of Columbia reduced the funding for the Adapted Community Recreation Program by $16,000. However, directors at Boone County Family Resources and the Department of Parks and Recreation have proposed replacing that money for the 2010 fiscal year.

The Program provides activities for residents of Paquin Towers and disabled community members.

Karen Ramey is Columbia's the Superintendent of Recreation and Community Programs. She says they're surveying community members to see how the money can be put to its best use.

"Right now we're trying to work with people that are disabled in the community to find out what they want to do on a broader scale."

Phil Steinhaus is the CEO of the Columbia Housing Authority. He says he's excited for the opportunity for the community recreation program to continue and grow.

"Many of our residents are unable to work. And so without these types of important social interaction some of our residents might be left with little to do with their time."

Any restored funding will not be approved until the City approves its budget later this fall. Until then city planners and the folks at Paquin Towers will do what they can with the money they have. © Copyright 2009, KBIA
