Nixon to Release State Budget
(2009-06-25)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
Governor Jay Nixon will release details of the state budget this morning. Nixon will hold a news conference at 11 at the capitol. Nixon and has staff have been going through the proposed budget line by line for the past several weeks. Legislators presented the governor with a balanced budget last month, but a spokesperson for Nixon says the governor will have to make significant cuts to that proposal because revenue projections for the upcoming fiscal year are way down. There has been quite a bit of speculation about which programs may be cut. Nixon's office has confirmed some state employees will lose their jobs. Another item that some legislators say the governor may cut is 31.2 million dollars that's been allocated for the Ellis Fischel Cancer center. Legislators went back and forth on the issue during the legislative session, but if Nixon does veto the funding, then it's out of the budget. June 30th is the end of Fiscal year 2009.
