Meningitis Hits Camdenton High School
(2009-02-17)
(KBIA) - A suspected case of meningitis hit Camdenton High School last week. The school notified the Camden County Health Department Saturday morning after the hospitalized student was diagnosed. The student was last listed as in critical but stable condition. Bee Dampier a health official says the department is working with the school to provide information to parents, students, and other doctors in the area.

"The school sent out a district wide notice on their alert system on Sunday afternoon, they followed up with a letter to the parents on Monday rather with information sheets from the CDC, it's also on their website."

Health officials say bacterial meningitis can be treated if detected early. Officials stressed that other students cannot become infected just by being in the same school or classroom with the infected student. Although catching the infection from an infected person is rare, department officials also encourage parents to be on the lookout. If parents have any questions they should contact the Camden County Health Department.
