Top Republicans Question Nixon's Tuition Freeze Proposals
(2009-01-22)
(KBIA) - Governor Jay Nixon's proposed college tuition freeze for the 2009-2010 school year is being questioned by the top Republican in the Missouri Senate. President Pro-tem Charlie Shields of St. Joseph calls the idea premature.

"If you look at all the things that are in the general revenue budget, public safety, mental health, corrections, Dept. of Natural Resources if you've already guaranteed one sector that you will not be cut,' you are saying to the others you WILL be cut.'"

Nixon's proposal would freeze tuition hikes at public universities on the condition that they are spared from budget cuts. Shields indicates, though, that they'll have a better gauge on the proposal once the entire state spending plan is released. © Copyright 2012, KBIA
