(St. Louis Public Radio) - An Illinois casino is spending $150,000 to try to defeat a casino ballot initiative in Missouri.

The Missouri group Voters for Good Government says it plans to use the money from the Casino Queen in East St. Louis for an ad campaign asserting Proposition A in Missouri is misleading. The measure would repeal Missouri's $500 loss limit, cap the number of casino licenses that can be issued and raise taxes on casinos. The money it generates would go to public schools.

Supporters have received more than $14 million from Ameristar and Pinnacle Entertainment, which operate casinos in the St. Louis area.

A spokesman from for group supporting Prop A says the owners of the Casino Queen are just trying to limit competition. © Copyright 2012, St. Louis Public Radio
