'No Hate' Signs Appear in Downtown Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
In reaction to the planned march in Columbia by members of the National Socialist Movement, Peace Nook volunteers hit the streets to distribute 'no hate' signs to businesses on 9th street.
The no hate signs, which read "NO HATE IN OUR TOWN," have been met with both interest and indifference by local business owners. Some business owners say the signs are a way to passively oppose the hateful voices of the neo-Nazi group that plans to march downtown this weekend. A handful of business owners say that the best thing to do is ignore the march by not even hanging the signs.
Shakespeare's Pizza Manager Jessi Kelty says the signs will be a small, passive voice that focuses on community togetherness.
"Putting up a sign is a little more passive than rioting against them or something like that."
Kelty says that though it should be business as usual at the restaurant, workers are being encouraged to be more alert. The march will run right by Shakespeare's Pizza and other 9th Street businesses as it makes its way down Elm Street.
