Are California leafy greens safe to eat this year?
(2007-04-12)
(kazu) - Lettuce and spinach crops are in the ground now in California's Salinas Valley and before long, you'll see them as pre-washed bagged leafy greens at your local supermarket. But after last fall's big E. coli outbreak in spinach that sickened 200 people and killed three, the big question is - are those leafy greens safe to eat? Here, we hope, are some answers.

First, check out KAZU's Ben Adler's story on NPR's Morning Edition.

Then, download the MP3 file on this page to listen to Ben's interview with Trevor Suslow, an E. coli expert at U.C. Davis respected by both the agriculture industry and government regulators.
