Big Sur Evacuated BIG SUR (kazu) - The Basin Complex Fire jumped a fire line at Northcoast Ridge Road on Wednesday forcing the evacuation of residents in Big Sur. The evacuation order initially came down for residents on the east side of Highway 1 between Andrew Molera State Park and one mile south of Limekiln State Park, but soon after, residents on the west side of the highway were also told to pack up and leave.
Since the evacuation, fire officials say the fire has been very active in the evacuation zone between the Ventana Inn and Andrew Molera State Park. The fire continues to move west, though as of Thursday morning, it has not reached Highway 1.
Firefighters are focusing their efforts on protecting the community of Big Sur. They're being challenged by high winds, low humidity and the steep terrain. © Copyright 2009, kazu
