Take a dramatic journey from Europe to the American West as chronicled by Robert Louis Stevenson, Jules Tavernier and Paul Frenzeny, three artists who undertook this daring adventure in the 1870s. Two experts – Dr. Claudine Chalmers, award-winning author and historian of the French in early California, and Keith Decker, RLS enthusiast, actor and playwright – will guide us through their remarkable story.
Dr. Chalmers will share the cross country experiences of artists Jules Tavernier and Paul Frenzeny as illustrators for Harper’s Magazine. Mr. Decker will read excerpts from Robert Louis Stevenson’s personal account of his trip across the American plains 135 years ago.
Stevenson, Frenzeny and Tavernier were closely associated with the local French speaking community which surrounded the Stevenson House at that time. The event will sustain the French flavor with music, light refreshments and wine.
