Zent Named to the Texas Distance Learning Association Hall of Fame
(2007-03-28)
(kamu) - Dr. Rodney L. Zent was named to the Texas Distance Learning Association (TxDLA) Hall of Fame on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at the TxDLA Annual Conference in Galveston, Texas. The TxDLA Hall of Fame award recognizes long-term distance learning practitioners and advocates whose careers include outstanding achievements in the field.

Dr. Zent is the Executive Director of Educational Broadcast Services (EBS) at Texas A&M University, where he has worked since 1972. In that capacity, he serves as CEO for TTVN, the state-wide data and videoconference network that provides connections for teaching and administrative functions for all members of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS). TTVN provides distance learning, commodity Internet, Intranet2, and intranet services to more than 100 data locations and more than 300 videoconference sites in Texas, Mexico City, and the Texas A&M University campus in Doha, Qatar. Under the leadership of Dr. Zent, TTVN was the among the very first videoconference networks serving higher education in Texas and is now a national model for effective use of distance learning technologies.

In addition to his role as CEO of TTVN, Dr. Zent also serves as the General Manager of KAMU-TV/DT and KAMU-FM, the university's Public Broadcasting stations. Both stations provide the Bryan/College Station community and the Brazos Valley with high definition digital programming and produce quality television and radio programs for local, regional, and national audiences.

As a leader of the Texas Public Broadcasting Association, Dr. Zent has directed a $20 million grant project that enabled the creation of the Texas Public Broadcasting Education Network (TPBEN). TPBEN now digitally interconnects Texas' 14 Public Television Stations and has provided funding for all stations to upgrade to high definition television broadcasting.

Dr. Zent is also an Assistant Professor in the Texas A&M University Department of Educational Human Resource Development. He maintains a practice of distance learning teaching and advocacy that has helped launch the careers of many distance educators.

Dr. Zent attributes much of his success in distance learning and broadcasting to the support of the staff of Educational Broadcast Services. Together, they have worked to take advantage of new technologies and techniques that impact the students of the Texas A&M University System and the people of the Brazos Valley.
