Do Your Kids Babysit? Enroll Them In Safe Sitter Class
colleague's loss, Dr. Patricia Keener realized that preventable deaths like this happened too often. Her response to the tragedy was a solution, and
Safe Sitter was born. Babysitting is so much more than "sitting with a baby".
Accidents are the leading cause of death in children, and Dr. Keener knew that many of them were preventable. She decided that the best way to prevent
accidents was proper training for babysitters. The first Safe Sitter class was conducted in her own child's school. Since that first class of twelve,
thousands of young people have completed the course and become Safe Sitters. Here at St. Joseph Regional Health Center, over 600 children have been trained as Safe Sitters.
Safe Sitter is an instructional course designed for 11 to 13 year olds who are seeking proper training to become babysitters. During the three-day course, students listen, practice and role play to learn about a variety of topics including:
Safety precautions
CPR and care for a choking infant or child
Recognizing emergencies
Calling for emergency help
The course also covers the basics of child care, including how to feed and diaper an infant and behaviors to expect when dealing with each age group. Ethical and business
principles of babysitting are also discussed. To become a Safe Sitter, students must pass an oral, written, and practical exam. On the last day of the course, parents and
friends are invited to attend the graduation ceremony to recognize the Safe Sitters.
