Poll: Conservatives Grow Wary of Mixing Church and State
(2008-08-25)
(Associated Press) -

A new study suggests that American social conservatives are growing more wary of church involvement in politics.

Fifty percent of conservatives in the Pew Forum survey say churches and other places of worship should stay out of social and political matters, up from 30 percent four years ago.

That shift in conservative thought has brought the country to a tipping point on the question. The survey suggests that a slim majority of all Americans now thinks churches should keep out of politics.

In the presidential race, the survey found that John McCain leads Barack Obama 68 percent to 24 percent among white evangelical Protestants, but just 28 percent say they're strong supporters of McCain.
