Former Md. lieutenant governor replaces Watts at Republican GOPAC
(2007-01-26)
(KOSU) - Former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele is taking over for former Oklahoma Congressman JC Watts as head of the Republican fund raising GOPAC.
Watts stepped down this week after four years as chairman to focus on his private enterprises.
Watts owns a political consulting firm in Washington, and Steele says Watts approached him about the GOPAC post.
Steele says he will focus on the Washington-based organization's mission on building a grass-roots infrastructure that will ensure Republican victories in local, state and national elections. He hopes to accomplish this by helping recruit potential officeholders in his own mold, those with solid conservative credentials who aren't afraid to reach out across party and ideological lines.
Steele's appointment is effective February 1st.
