Ford's Thoughts On Successors Revealed
(2007-01-13)
(Associated Press) - Former President Ford once called Jimmy Carter a "disaster" and said Ronald Reagan received too much credit for ending the Cold War.

Those are two of many comments Ford made in 25 years of interviews with The Grand Rapids Press. But Ford spoke to his hometown paper only on the condition that the remarks be withheld until after his death.

Who did Ford think was the best president of his lifetime? Dwight Eisenhower. He also praised Richard Nixon as a foreign policy master despite the Watergate scandal that drove him from office.

Seventeen years after calling him a disaster, Ford said Carter was a fine, decent individual who made no major mistakes. As for George W. Bush, Ford said he didn't know him well enough to rate him.
