The 2014 Cinema by the Canal summer outdoor film series continues with “Saving Mr. Banks” on Thursday, July 17 at the Lewes Canalfront Park. This film series for all ages is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park.
Starring Oscar® Award winning actors, Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks” is the previously untold story of how the beloved Disney classic, “Mary Poppins” made it to the big screen. When Walt Disney’s daughters were young, he promised to turn their favorite children’s book, written by English author P.L. Travers, into a movie. A twenty-year pursuit for the book rights ensues with Mrs. Travers (as she insists on being called) refusing to relinquish them. In need of cash she reconsiders Disney’s offer and we witness a two-week time period where Travers and Disney butt heads during a torturous development process that would produce one of the best-loved children’s films of all time. Says Claudia Puig of the “USA Today”, “Sentiment is at its heart. The legions who grew up on “Mary Poppins” will find it delightfully satisfying to hear snippets of its enormously catchy songs and watch its captivating creative journey”. [USA, 2013, Runtime: 125 min, Rated PG-13]
The film will begin at dusk (8:15 - 8:30 pm) at Canalfront Park located at 211 Front Street in Lewes. Admission is free. Please bring chairs or blankets and come enjoy a unique and fun family outdoor film experience. For more information, please visit www.rehobothfilm.com.
