Panel: Environmental & Economic Implications of Natural Gas Drilling for Maryland
General Event Information
Event Category:
Salisbury University Event
Dates and Times:
April 30, 7:00PM-9:00PM; (Location: Guerrieri University Center; Wicomico Room)
Featuring panelists Drew Cobbs from the American Petroleum Institute, Thomas R. Cawthern from SUís Geography and Geosciences Department, author and Pennsylvania resident Seamus McGraw, and Mike Tidwell from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. The recent natural gas boom, spurred by advances in drilling technology, has been steeped in controversy. Some say that natural gas drilling enhances U.S. energy independence and provides jobs; others argue that it accelerates climate change and threatens our groundwater. Because of this controversy, Maryland enacted a temporary moratorium in 2011; the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission will issue its final report and recommendations in August. Panelists discuss the environmental and economic implications of natural gas drilling for Maryland. Sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department, Geography and Geosciences Department and the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE).
