The Delta region is about connections. Rivers and streams join, bringing life to the area. Politics, science, agriculture, commerce, art all come together in California's capital. People come from around the world, bringing their cultures with them. Worlds meet, relationships form, connections are made, and the old gives birth to the new amidst people who can appreciate both innovation and tradition.
A sculptor from Sacramento met a jeweler, who introduced her to a painter from Folsom. They met other painters, and fiber artists. This show came together through relationships between people who don't, on the surface, have much in common. Our youngest artist is in her teens, our oldest a retiree. We're from places far apart, our backgrounds are not the same, nor our work. Our media include paint, paper, gemstones, yarn, fabric, watercolors and pieces upcycled from forgotten jewelry. Our styles and tones vary from dark and mystical to warm and whimsical, and are influenced by traditional art from across the globe, history and science. Some of us incorporate recycled materials, others source from small businesses. What we share is a respect for each other, a desire to communicate through our art, and an appreciation for the Sacramento area and its lively arts and craft community. Out of our shared interest in art, friendships formed.
Just in time for the holiday season, Capital Public Radio is hosting an exhibit that is, at its heart, about friends and family, and friends who become family.
On Nov. 9, there will be a display of cards for people to sign for Girls Love Mail, a charity that gives handwritten messages of encouragement to women recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
