Instead natural and handmade craft items which are American made rather than imported from China state the owner respects the environment and artisan crafts. Flashy finishes on chairs and tables are out. Restored and antique furniture is in.
The kitchen is likely to see some major changes as granite is out as counter material. Replacing granite is soapstone, recycled materials such as glass and paper. The kitchen as pseudo restaurant with gleaming stainless steel is out. Glitz and statement appliances that are seldom used are also out.

Abundant recessed light fixtures especially without dimmers are out. The home is not a surgery center with harsh bright lights overhead. Table lamps cast a soft inviting light and are better suited to reading than overhead lights. Televisions in every room are out even though the trend for plasma screens is still hot.

Matching sets of furniture is out. As an alternative, furnishings include refurbished finds from resale stores and the overall look is a collection of interrelated treasures. Mini cube ottomans are out and interesting round or oval shapes replace them providing a softer look in the room. Monster size sleigh beds are out. Replacing the sleigh bed is an upholstered headboard detailed with nail heads and some tufting.
The mid-century modern home with entirely mid-century furniture is out unless the home is a museum. Remove an Eames chair and substitute a French bergere. Synthetic shag rugs are out as are fake animal hides. In their place find natural jute, hemp and handmade wool rugs. Chandeliers that combine rustic wood with crystals communicate an eco feel and aesthetic. Scented, colored candles are out and in their place are natural beeswax candles delicately turned and textured. No more elaborate gold leaf picture frames. Simple, hand finished wood frames enhance the art rather than hinder it.
