Let the EnviroHouse Be Your
Puget Sound’s only permanent ‘green’ model home and natural landscape exhibit Do you want to go "green" in your home, but you're not quite sure how to make it happen or even where to start? Visit the City of Tacoma's EnviroHouse for inspiration and resources to create a healthy home and yard.

Whether you're planning a full remodel, simply replacing an old appliance or want some natural landscape ideas, the EnviroHouse has it all with more than 150 "green" products and materials on display.

Here's just a partial list of the EnviroHouse's many "green" features. Be sure and visit for a guided tour to see and touch items that contribute to sustainable living.

ENERGY: Energy Efficient
• Appliances: ENERGY STAR appliances use 50% less energy and than standard models
• Lighting: Solatube skylight increases light output and block UV transmission
• Solar: Solar panels generate renewable energy from the sun



WATER: Water Efficient
• Toilet: High-efficient, pressure assist toilet reduces water by more than 30%
• Faucet/Showerheads: Faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads cut water use in half
• Appliances: Water efficient dishwasher and clothes washer use up to 50% less water than standard models

AIR: Healthy Indoor Air
• Paint: Zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint contains no ammonia and almost no odor
• Furniture: Low-emitting wood chairs, formaldehyde-free chair foam and fabric
• Insulation: Insulation made from soy-based products, recycled wood fiber and other natural products that are free of toxic chemicals and gases



SITE & LANDSCAPE: Low-Impact Site Development / Natural Landscape
• Irrigation controller: Irrigation controller applies water according to the local weather
• Rain garden: Collects, infiltrates and filters stormwater runoff
• Plants: Native/adaptable plants provide cleaner air, prevent erosion and flooding and improve water quality

MATERIALS: Sustainable, Reused
Durable, natural, renewable:
• Lap siding made of cement, sand and wood fibers; 50-year warranty
• Bamboo flooring, a rapidly renewable resource
• Lumber, window casings and baseboards made with FSC-certified wood


Recycled-content / salvage:
• Countertop made from recycled paper
• Sidewalk made from 100% recycled tires
• Salvaged, reused sinks from Habitat for Humanity
